According to an ancient legend, transmitted from generation to generation, the statue of Our Lady of Candelaria was being shipped to Puntagorda. Due to bad weather, the boat that transported the figurine had to anchor in El Proís, the only available mooring for larger ships on the coast of Tijarafe. For some strange reason, each time the sailors wanted to continue their voyage, something happened that made their departure impossible. After several attempts, they decided that the Virgin was trying to tell them that she wanted to stay here, so they brought her to a nearby cave, that still holds her name. She stayed there until the villagers built a hermitage for the statue.
