The festivities of Our Lady Candelaria have been held in the municipality Tijarafe since the beginning of the Spanish presence here. The first press coverage of the event, however, dates from the nineteenth century. The main day of the celebration has always been the 8th of September, although on the 7th it is already being announced by the church bells and fireworks. On the 8th, a mass is held in the church of Our Lady Candelaria. And since the beginning of the twentieth century, the “Fiesta del Diablo” has been added to the festivities. The “devil’s party” starts in the late evening and continues all through the night. The origin of this celebration dates back to 1923, and it has since become one of the most important festivals of the island.
