The Romería (pilgrimage) is one of the events of the celebrations in honour of Our Lady Candelaria, the yearly festival of Tijarafe. It takes place during the last weekend of August. The inhabitants of each neighbourhood prepare beautifully decorated chariots with traditional themes. The parade starts at the “Casa de la Cultura José Luis Lorenzo”, the community cultural center, and goes through the main streets of the village. During the tour, typical foods and beverages are distributed among the public, and folklore music is played and sung by local bands and choirs. The event ends with the traditional verbena (dance) on the main square, la Plaza de Candelaria, during which the best-dressed couple in traditional costume is elected.
