The mass of “Pascua de Resurrección” (Easter resurrection), which is held around midnight on “Sábado Santo” (holy Saturday) in the church of Our Lady Candelaria, is one of the oldest traditions of the municipality of Tijarafe. During this celebration, which is done in complete darkness, when the priest starts to sing “Gloria”, the lights are suddenly turned on. Then, a group of people storm into the church and throw flower petals around, while the church bells start ringing. Finally, a curtain falls, revealing the statue of the Resurrected. Another important event of the Semana Santa (holy week) of Tijarafe is the procession through the cobble stone streets of the village.
